Toro 51619 Ultra Blower Leaf Vacuum

I bought this at the local big box store because they didn't have the older model that got 3000+ raves here on Amazon (# 51609). As such, I was leery about buying the new model. To me, a cheaper, newer model just meant more outsourcing to China with a corresponding drop in quality. Well, even though I can't compare the 51619 to the 51609, I can say I'm completely 100% happy with the Toro 51619 Ultra.

Leaf Vacuum Vacuum Leaf Collection System

I put a large trash bag in a trash container and pull the edges over the top then tie the B & D leaf collector under the handles of the container, this way it can not slip off, attach it to my blower/vac and start vacuuming the leaves. What normally took two to three hours, now took less than one and I didn't have to bend over once.

The release on the pull string was a little tricky at first but after opening and closing it a few times I had no problems.

Without the B & D Leaf Collection System I was emptying the bag almost once every few minutes and making a mess each time. Now once the container if full I just tie the trash bag pull it out and put in another. I highly recomend it.

Toro Rake & Vac 10.5 Amp 2-Speed Electric Blower

I needed an electric blower for a 9-unit apartment building, for sweeping the balcones, stairwells, patio and carports. I didn't need heavy lawn raking or mulching capability. I wanted one without exhaust fumes and as quiet as possible as I prefer not having tenants throw eggs and hand grenades at me, so gas blowers were right out. These Toros were top rated by Consumer Reports, and the local Home Depot had these two on display out-of-box. As a certifiable gadget-itis afflicted Star Trek fanatic, I was all set to get the fancier one... the red 51599 Ultra. The black 51574 was noticeably lighter though--6.5 vs 7.5 lbs. The Ultra had variable speed vs 2 fixed speeds....however the fixed speeds were not too far inside the extremes of the Ultra--roughly 5% above and 10% below...so it appeared I could trade off maximum quiet for maximum power roughly as well. I also didn't need the mulching capability of the metal impeller. Still, I decided to try them both.

We have owned the Toro Super Electric Blower for about two years now. Its a two speed blower, and at the time we purchased it, was substantially cheaper than the Ultra. The blower has worked really well, as has the vacuum mulcher. It is also fairly quiet considering the volume of air being moved (sucked up by the impellers and either driven to the leaf collection bag, or to through the blower vent).

But there are a few things to be aware of:
a) Large leaves (eg. maple) can clog the impeller, and have to the manually cleared from the impeller blades. This doesn't happen all the time, but frequently enough that it bears mention in this review. Smaller leaves, like live oak leaves, are no problem at all.
b) Don't vacuum wet leaves, or you will discolor the collection bag.
c) Don't vacuum twigs larger than about half a centimeter in diameter, or you will break the plastic impeller.
d) Large acorns will break the impeller.

Over blower-vac worked without any problems for two years. Then it started rattling and vibrated really badly, so I guessed that one of impeller fins/blades must have broken, and sure enough one had. When an impeller fin breaks, the blower will still work fairly well (albeit it becomes very loud and vibrates very badly). However the vacuum will not work well at all.

Luckily, a new impeller from Toro runs about $10, and isn't difficult to install. Overall, not a bad buy at all, and I would recommend it. But I wish Toro made the impeller substantially stronger.

Edited on April 3, 2010: There's a solution to the plastic impeller - a metal impeller. Turns out the Toro magnesium alloy metal impeller sold with model 51599 fits the 51592. It is more expensive than a plastic impeller, but works better than the plastic impeller does at mulching leaves that are picked up. It also doesn't jam as easily as the plastic impeller does with large leaves.
